Why I changed career to work in the care sector

A career in the care sector is renowned for being one of the most rewarding jobs you can do, and for many good reasons. Being a paid carer means you can make a real difference to peoples’ lives daily – from cooking their favourite meal to making sure they are safe in their own home. We share Carol’s story on how her change in career from office administration into the home care sector to join our team here at TerraBlu Home Care, was the best choice she ever made.

From an office job to a career in care

Carol held a series of office jobs throughout her working career after graduating in administration. About 15 years ago, she needed some extra money, and so approached Richard Gould, Managing Director at TerraBlu Home Care, based in Tunbridge Wells, who offered Carol flexible weekend work, to help ends meet.

“I was working in an office job 4 days a week and had a pet dog who became ill. I met Richard and asked if I could work weekends, alongside my main job. He said to come and work for them, so I did 1 or 2 days per week, and sometimes worked extra to help if I ever needed to. I loved how flexible they were”, explains Carol.

Covid-19 pandemic caused a change in Carol’s job role

During lockdown, Carol’s office job role changed and she began to feel increasingly unhappy. Then a few months’ hater her boss decided to close the Kent office she was working in, making her redundant. Luckily, her connection with TerraBlu meant she could increase her hours there and maintain a steady income.

A fresh start in the care industry

“I came back to TerraBlu and asked if I could have some more hours and they said of course, how many hours can you give us. They were really welcoming, and I now work there full time; it is by far the most rewarding job I have ever done,” says Carol.

She continues, “Working at TerraBlu was where I found my love for working in the care industry; I loved the people and how the company was run. You can tell Richard really invests in the staff and all my colleagues are great fun to work with. I don’t know why I didn’t go into the care industry 40 years ago!”

Changing career for some of us seems a bold move and not always a simple one, but fortunately for Carol working in the care sector has ignited her passion for work again and given her financial security.
