The death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II marks the end of Britain's longest reigning monarch and a truly remarkable life. In the days following the news, we asked our clients to share their opinions on the impact she had had, and we were surprised to discover the personal stories that many of our clients had encountered during her reign. In honour of Her Majesty, we wanted to share them with you.
A monumental monarch
From the moment she first ascended to the throne, she made history as the first monarch to ever have a televised coronation. Our client, Diana L, fondly told us her memories of that day: having recently moved into her new family house, she remembers being nestled between her parents on the sofa to watch.
She recalls the excitement, the commotion and the horses. Oh, the horses! She tells us that once the horses were gone, she lost interest, much to the amusement of her parents. But having been so young, she felt as though she grew up with the Queen, watching her grow into her role as head of state.
More recently, Diana L has enjoyed visiting the local post-box where a local crochet artist had adorned the top with a tribute to The Queen’s passing, with a model of the Queen in a lime green suit and matching hat, with two Guards either side and flags hanging around the edges. The local crochet artist often pays tribute to big celebrations by fixing a scene of characters to the top of the post-box to bring smiles to the community.
Queen of style
Verna tells us that when growing up, the Queen provided fashion inspiration, and her mother used to enjoy making clothes that were inspired by the Queen’s outfits. We can’t argue with that… Even recently, the Queen’s style certainly remained iconic, and she didn’t shy away from bright and bold colours!
So close yet so far
We all know that the queen was not one to miss out on her royal duties if she could help it. One of our clients, Diana, attended an event with the Queen and recalls to us the heart-breaking moment when the Queen was walking up to her but then was called away as the event was running behind, so poor Diana never got to speak to her. Diana watched the Queen’s State Funeral in a local nursing home with her friends.
Lastly, Joan amazed us by casually announcing that she had met her majesty not once or twice, but four times. She didn’t disclose many details about each meeting but remembered each one fondly.
Though we were all saddened by the news of Her Majesty’s passing, reminiscing with our clients over the last few weeks has truly reminded us of what it means to be a home carer. Hearing their stories has been a chance to share a wonderful memory.
