Father’s Day is a time to honour your dad or a particularly special male figure in your life, returning all of the love, admiration and generosity that they have given you over the years. To help celebrate all the great fathers out there, we have compiled a list of activities to do with your dad this Father’s Day and ways to make them feel special… No matter what age they are!
Games are fun, social, and mentally engaging. Their cognitive benefits make this a fun and therapeutic activity. Brain games have become a hot topic in caregiver and senior circles. So, a simple Google search will bring you a wealth of creative ideas. Here are a few to get you started: Grab a deck of cards and play Dad’s favourite card game, find a jigsaw puzzle of a familiar place or strike up a round of bingo with the whole family. Perfect fun for a rainy day.
With the recent sunshine and the forecast set to be positive for most, why not host a BBQ with all your family or some of dad’s friends and serve alongside a refreshing mocktail to stay hydrated. For extra brownie points make sure to have all your dad’s favourite food and sauces out!
Nothing says Father’s Day like a day of fishing. Find a local lake and enjoy a relaxing day of casting and chatting. Not only can fishing strengthen your relationship but also it enhances cognitive health in ageing adults. It’s a win-win!
For many senior dads, golfing is a cherished hobby. Even if your dad already spends his weekends golfing, he’s sure to appreciate a special trip with his family. Why not take him to a golf course he’s never been to before and finish with some refreshments in the clubhouse?
If your dad loves to garden, spend some time outside tending to his masterpiece alongside him. It’s a great activity that stimulates all the senses, strengthens our connection with nature and can reward us with beautiful surroundings and even nutritious food. Maybe create a pot or planter to enjoy in months to come. Involve the grandchildren too, as this helps create fond memories and a talking point on future visits.
A little walk and some sunshine makes all the difference to your well-being. So why not take a stroll through the park with your dad and enjoy the beautiful scenery. You could take a pit stop in a café along the way and treat yourself to a well-deserved ice cream!
We hope you have a lovely Father’s Day. We understand that it can be a day of reflection for some, and so our thoughts are with you. Should you be spending the day with an elderly relative, then do pay attention to their health and wellbeing. If you have any concerns, then please feel welcome to contact us to discuss any matters.
