Christmas is a time for togetherness and looking out for our loved ones

Christmas is upon us, and whether you are planning a big family get together or something more relaxed over the festive season, we hope you have a wonderful time. As the weather becomes colder, many people look forward to coming together in the comfort of their homes whilst catching up with friends and family.

Whilst spending time with those you love, please do take time to consider their health and wellness. These longer periods together with a relative or neighbour offer a great opportunity to see any changes in their abilities to manage day to day tasks. We have pulled together some things to consider whilst you enjoy each other’s company over the festive season, and beyond.

How to notice changes in health and wellbeing of an elderly loved one

As children, family, and friends of an elderly loved one, it is our role to watch for the warning signs that might suggest a change in their health and wellbeing. Some changes, such as weakened strength and mobility can be down to the natural ageing process, however, sometimes medical conditions like stroke, incontinence or the onset of Dementia or Parkinson’s can be noticed more easily when you know what to look out for.

Here is a list of things to consider when spending time with an elderly friend or family member.

Does your loved one experience:

  • difficulty getting dressed
  • challenges in personal hygiene
  • trouble cleaning areas the house
  • difficulty getting to the shops for food and clothes
  • signs of weight loss and malnutrition
  • changes in speech like mumbling or slurring words
  • difficultly in remembering recent events or conversations
  • repeating themselves frequently or not holding a coherent conversation
  • signs of withdrawal and not joining in conversation
  • regular tiredness or feeling faint
  • feeling anxious about going out alone
  • a reluctance in going to once loved clubs or events

Show you are here to help

If you feel that some or a few of these warning signs have popped up, raise them with your loved one. Remember to approach them with sincerity and warmth as this confrontation may be very difficult for some to accept and they may also feel embarrassed. So, take it gently and show that you are here to help.

A home carer can help with the little things or more complex needs

If the health and well-being of your loved one is too much for you to handle all by yourself, don’t worry you’re not alone, we can help.

“Christmas is often the time of year where relatives might spend all day together or stay the night and then notice changes in behaviour, strength or ability in undertaking simple tasks”, says Netta Sceal, Deputy Care Manager at TerraBlu.

“We have then been able to introduce our services and suggest ways of supporting a loved one, either through providing a basic home care package or a more comprehensive care plan. Thereby ensuring their relative can remain living a high quality of life within the comfort of their home, whilst giving all family members peace of mind,” adds Emma Foard, Operations Support Manager.

It’s easy to overlook small changes to the health and wellbeing of an elderly parent, relative or neighbour, but spending quality time together over Christmas and New Year can offer a chance not only to catch up but also to see where they might need additional support.

Please give us a call on 01892 529 429, if you think your loved one might benefit from the support of a home carer, to help with day-to-day tasks or assistance with a medical condition. We’d be delighted to have an informal discussion and offer options that we think might be suitable.
